Project Name:
Hemp Chutka Overcoat
Project introduction:
The Hemp Chutka overcoat is inspired by the traditional weft-pile Tibetan sheep wool blankets, known as Chutka, made by The Bhotiyas of The Himalayas. This unique weaving technique has been reinterpreted through hand knitting by women artisans from Almora, Uttarakhand. Fiber from the stem of Himalayan Hemp, locally known as Bhang, has been spun into yarn and used in the loop detail in the knitting. Natural dyeing has been added to the local skills of spinning and knitting to create the overcoat.
