Project Introduction:
Pleated is an accordion-fold book with two different stories. It is in part the story of author’s Ammama (maternal grandmother) as narrated through the colours of the sarees (Indian traditional drape) she owned. The other side celebrates other Unconventional women from South India.
The horizontal border illustrations on the front side (created like a saree border) spotlight key events. Colour is not depicted visually to allow coming together of different graphic motifs of a kanjeevaram (handloom weave). I wanted the readers to experience the unfolding of the book through the pleats of a saree.
